Delamation* – noun
1. a splitting apart into layers.
In our inaugural story about fiberglass pool repair nightmares we examine delamination. Delamination occurs when the layers begin to separate. This could be due to improper preparation or simply an inferior pool paint product. In this episode, we turn to one of my past clients, we’ll call him John. That may even be his real name. He had a fiberglass pool and he wanted to improve its look. His family decided to use an epoxy swimming pool pain and, in his words, this is what happened:
…After a week of internet research, I purchased an “Epoxy Hi Build” pool paint. We wanted to do something different with the look of our pool so we painted the bottom of the pool paint a dark blue, the sides a sky blue and the steps down the pool a bright yellow with “sun rays” extending out into the bottom of the pool. We followed their preparation and application directions to the letter. It was very impressive and we received many compliments from our friends and family.
A year later we began to notice that the paint was coming off in thin layers. A week after the paint delamination began, we noticed that the bottoms of our feet were turning blue after only a few minutes of walking in the pool.
To make matters even worse, my wife’s brother visited our house and was so impressed at the look of the pool that he purchased and applied the same paint shortly after we did.
The bottom line is that … both our pool and my brother-in–law’s pool are out of use due to the defective paint delamination and the pigment rubbing off on the skin.
John’s experience isn’t new and it’s certainly not uncommon. Searching the Internet can yield thousands of results. You can visit your local mega-hardware store and pick up products that claim to be pool paints. The options can be overwhelming.
So what happened to John’s pool? He called us at Ultraguard, and we walked him through our fiberglass pool repair process and he now has the pool he wanted, without the worry about pool delamination.
